Disney theatrical is making room for "The Little mermaid" at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre where "Beauty & The Beast has run for thirteen years. “The Little Mermaid” will begin previews at the Lunt-Fontanne on Nov. 3. and open December 6 after its out-of-town tryout at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.
The musical, adapted from the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, with a book by Pulitzer Prize-winner Doug Wright, tells the story of Ariel, a stunning young mermaid who dreams leaving her father , King Titan's, underwater kingdom to be be where "the people are". But first, she’ll have to defy her father, escape the clutches of an evil sea witch and convince a prince that she’s the girl with the perfect voice.
The Little mermaid will be directed by Francesca Zambello, with choreography Stephen Mear. The Disney movie's Oscar-winning score by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman ("Under The Sea", "Kiss The Girl", "Part of Your World") will be supplemented by nine new songs by Menken and his Glenn Salter (Sister Act). The casting for Little mermaid is expected to be announced soon.
Disney Theatrical Productions President Thomas Schumacher describes George Tsypin's set as agressive, large scale and exotic.
